Camp Whittlewood beginner guide: what to know first
Camp Whittlewood is a short, single-player horror RPG that launches on Steam on 28 September 2026. Nothing about it is complicated on purpose — the game is a weekend at a camp, a campfire story that starts coming true, and a set of key items you have to find before the story lets you go. This page collects everything the developer has actually confirmed, so you know what you are buying before launch night.
What kind of game it is
The Steam page calls it an old-school horror RPG, and the feature list backs that up: it is a short horror adventure built on old-school RPG interaction mechanics. You play as a Bark Scout dropped off at Camp Whittlewood, a former logging camp inside a protected forest, and the setup is that an old story about a woodcarver who stalks the camp is teased at you before the trip even starts.
By the time the campfire story begins to come true, the other campers are the least of your problems. The publisher's own wording is that you are shunned by your peers and have to scour the campground to uproot its gnarled history before it buries you.

How progress works
Three systems are confirmed on the store page, and they structure the whole game:
- Key items gate the story. There are key items to find to progress through the story — progression is pick-up-and-advance, not combat level grinding.
- The crew decides the tone. You are stuck with a strange crew of fellow campers, each with a distinct personality, and the dialog below the screenshots already shows they are not subtle about the danger (Buggs: "…and now there's an entire colony of AXE MURDERERS WAITING FOR US TO GO TO SLEEP!").
- The ending is not singular. The store page promises multiple unique endings to discover, so a single playthrough does not show you the whole game.

Before launch day
- Check the requirements. It is deliberately light — Windows 10, an 11th-gen Core i3, 2 GB RAM and 1 GB of disk. Details on the release date and PC requirements page.
- Decide on controller or keyboard early. Both are supported; full controller support is listed, so a couch playthrough works.
- Wishlist on Steam if you are on the fence. The only official signal we have on demand is the Steam page itself.
- Bookmark this site. The endings, key item locations and full character roster land here right after the game unlocks.
What to do in the first ten minutes
- Read every sign and talk to every camper before you leave the main clearing — the campfire story is delivered through dialog, and the game is short enough that skipping NPC talk costs you the setup.
- Open your inventory the moment you pick anything up. Because progression runs on key items, anything with a proper name in the inventory is story-relevant; junk does not get an inventory entry.
- Save before you follow anyone into the woods. The game has not confirmed an autosave policy, and multiple endings usually means branching point-of-no-return moments.
